Heather Kalinowski is a pet lover and internet journalist at Trupanion, North America’s fastest growing pet insurance company. Trupanion offers 90% coverage for diagnostic tests, surgeries, and medications if a pet becomes sick or injured.
Most people, when they hear that Trupanion is a pet-friendly office, assume that we allow only dogs. While admittedly dogs do make up a majority of our furry office mates, cats are also allowed! It is so much fun to work in an environment that supports pet passionate people and allows them to bring their feline friends into the office. I’ve noticed that having pets in the office actually adds to our productivity and keeps moral up. Here’s how:
· You Take Much-Needed Breaks – I know from experience that it can be hard to tear yourself away from the computer when you have a lot of work to do. But it’s important to take breaks every once in a while to give your mind and eyes a bit of a rest. A sweet kitty sitting in a bed on the desk provides for a much-needed distraction every once in a while. A quick pet and some loves can do wonders for productivity!
· It’s Comforting – This is two-fold. First, it’s comforting knowing that your sweet little one is right beside you and not stuck at home all day. And second, when you are having a bad day, there is nothing more comforting than a cuddle from your favorite cat. Having your cat around just makes you more relaxed in general throughout the day.
· It Gives You Something to Talk About – Your cat is always the subject of conversation, am I right? The funny things he does, the trouble he gets into, and the sweet moments shared together can always be discussed. If you are looking to break the ice with a new coworker or manager, it’s much easier when they are as pet passionate as you!
· You Can Quickly Get Advice – Has your cat all of a sudden started ‘fishing’ in your fish tank? Or has he changed his behavior in other ways? Working with other cat owners can be invaluable when it comes to getting quick advice about health issues or training hurdles. In my experience, cat owners love to give and receive help from other cat owners. Which leads me to…
· It Gives You a Sense of Community – Cat owners share a bond and working in an environment where you don’t have to hide your love for your cat can give you an instant sense of community. Sharing stories, offering advice, and simply knowing these people understand you can help you instantly feel comfortable in a new setting.
I’m sure you can all agree, as cat lovers yourself, that having cats in the office space can be a great thing. Are you able to work with cats in your office? What are some other benefits you can think of?

We are not sure about the 'traveling to the office ' part, but we agree that a kitty in the office is a good thing :) Everyone can adore us there!!!! heehee
Purrs Tillie and Georgia
Oh dear Cod NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Save me from a school-full of grabby Humans!
I actually RUN my human's home office!
Mom said it's nice if she was allowed to bring me to work, but I don't think I want to go with her, because I'm more outdoor cat than indoor. I love to be outside even when mom stays home. I love to be in the garden or on the roof. And I don't like to travel by car twice a day. and I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do while human is working ?
Wonderful post!
I am so tempted to forward this post to my manager!! LOL!!! Yay for pet friendly offices!! Thanks Heather and Caren! Take care
x
@Tillie and Georgia, I think they are confusing us with "woofies"...we might think it was a waste of time traveling back and forth and sitting being BORED!
@Old Kitty, part of me likes the idea and the other part doesn't, I would be afraid of a cat escaping or getting lost inside somewhere. I am all for pet friendly offices though but for cats I think more precautions need to be taken.
@Fisher and Staff yep, Heather does a great job!
@Mr Puddy that is sort of what I meant, what would a cat do when someone is working?
@Sparkle yep Cody does too! Since we work from home of course they are here and I LOVE IT but I would be super nervous if I had to transport Cody somewhere every day where I worked. Dakota would be different but Cody would have me worried. Then I couldn't run errands on the way home either!
@Spitty LMAO! I sooooo know what you are talking about! My husband was a teacher for 36 years!!! You guys rock!
I think many of our four-legged kids would love to migrate to your country as most of our public places have "NO PETS ALLOWED" signs everywhere.
I considerz maiself da offis manager in our home offis... plus da muze, wen it comes time fur mai mommy to work on her bloggy.
Liek ebbywun else, tho, I'd have sumfhin ta say about travelin' back-'n-forth to an out-uv-da-home offis. (Dere wud be complaynin'... o yes, dere'd be complaynin'. ;D)
LOL I don't work otherwise I think I'd try and bring my kitty!
We have Trupanion. It's a very good insurance too! Lots of super friendly peoples!!
Mommy M and The Garrison
Alex likes to help me when I work from home, but he has no desire to travel to my office...
While I think it's an awesome concept - I know my two wouldn't like this plan. But for very socially inclined, adventurous felines, I think this is totally purrrfect!
Run for the hills
Benny & Lily
@Priscilla PLEASE COME OVER!!! I soooo wish you would! :)
@Benny and Lily lol
@The Whiskeratti agree with you one zillion percent!
@Hilary I think Cody would be the same
@Knotted Fingers, I am sooo happy you wrote this and I am thrilled that you have Trupanion! I keep forgetting to check with my vet to see if they would accept Trupanion because if I get insurance (which I sadly keep putting off) that is who I would go with. They are wonderful!
@GlamKitty I know Cody sure agrees with you about the "complainin'!" lol
We used to have a business here in town that had two Siamese cats that lived there full time. I think it was an appliance store, but don't remember because the only reason I ever went in was to have a talk with the kitties who loved to lounge around in the windows.
M wishes she would have been allowed a pet in the office when she worked. They are great stress relievers, M says.
I can't imagine why cats would be less likely to go. I see more cats than dogs in work places around here.
Scott and I LOVE all our office cats! Of course, he works from home...
Thanks for all your comments on this post! Many of you made a very good point - being in an office environment isn't for every cat! Many cats may not like all the hubbub and prefer to stay home. But for those cats who love nothing more than to lay around all day and get attention, it's definitely a great option!
I can't imagine an office without cats!
Aunty Caren,
Mama says all of us are too bossy and many of her staff would resign if we start going to the office too. Also, she said we sleep on the job too much. There's no pleasing a lady boss, eh? And Dad works for her! purrrr *giggles*
p.s. Blogger's been naughty. This is our 3rd attempt at commenting. Hope it get through this time.
@Linda, for certain places I think it is a wonderful idea! I have gone to a few cat themed retail shops that had cats walking around and frankly I went there, like you, primarily to pet and talk to the kitties. If I were still in advertising and going to an office, first of all they weren't allowed, second, I don't think they would want to be. I love being at home and having my Cody in the office next to me (unless he is on a smoke break of course) lol
@Cat-from-Sydney you got through! It might have been because I use comment moderation. If I don't approve the comments quickly, they don't get on that fast. If I'm not home or busy they aren't posted. I apologize, I get to 'em as quickly as I can! Thanks for your patience! I like that you said you "sleep too much" lol.
@Ingrid, at home yep!
@Heather, soooo true!! Thank for stopping by and sharing in the convo!!
@Katnip Lounge yep, at home is the best!
@Bailey, really? You must live in a super cool place! I used to work at a newspaper in downtown Cleveland. Obviously pets weren't allowed and if they had been I don't think Bobo (my cat the time) or Cody would be big fans of riding to work on the freeway every day!
@Mario that is soooo true! They are SUPER good stress relievers. I am always super stressed lol, imagine how I would be if I DIDN'T have a cat?? lol
Most of the cats that come in are quite dog-friendly so it's really fun to see! The dogs go crazy that there are cats, and the cats are like, "what's all the fuss about?" :)
How fun does it get?! I think it's just the coolest when people get to take their pets along. I wonder how much better the world would be if more could do just that!
Oh I wish my office was like that - our office is barely people friendly. I so wish that more companies were like this for people to bring in their pets - even if it were just for times they need to run to the vet and then come in with them.
Since my mom person is home all the time she gets to spend all of her time with us. But she knows any workplace would be better with pets in them!
Nubbin wiggles,
Oskar
I would love to have cats in my work, but it is a hospital and that is unviable!
Kisses!
@Stacy and Ellie that's cause cats are "cool like that" lol
@Repositorio yep nooo way at a hospital!
@Oskar we are lucky that our moms are home! xoxo
@Amy now THAT is a great idea! There were times when I was working outside of the home where if I could have brought my cat to work in his carrier to take him to the vet later on, that would have been a HUGE blessing!
@Art and Sew Forth good point!
Oh, this is so cool! I wish I could take my Sammy and Moosey to work with me. But I don't think they'd like the daily train rise. :)
Mom always wants to take me to her office. I refuse!
Yes, wouldn't it be fun to work in a pet friendly office. Oh, wait, Jan does - sort of - since she is home working on the computer for blogging and designs. How lucky can one get?
Since Romeo's post doesn't have links to the cat rescue stories posted today, we didn't realize that was your Cody. What a sweet story of how he came to live with you. Percy bonded very closely with Merci since she rescued him.
With so many people working in a home office it's much more likely that pets will want to get involved.
I'm from Ontario and I can only recall once seeing an animal in an office and I believe the company had something to do with pets. It was a long time ago... so maybe the rules of changed here
I once worked on a hospital ward for female patients who had dementia & we adopted a stray cat. The old ladies loved him, they cuddled him, he slept on some of their beds at night & he brought a lovely atmosphere to the ward.
@meowmeowmans I don't think they would either!
@wockley there was a cat and a dog at the nursing home where my father-in-law used to be, I agree, they brought huge comfort to the patients there, that is for sure!
@Denise yes back in the day we could never bring pets to work, I still don't know of very many places that allow it but it is changing!
@blessingsgoddess Cody assists me at home and I know many other bloggers pets do too!
@Jan awww that is adorable about Percy and Merci, yep that was my boy! Yep you know what? I didn't realize there weren't links but you are right! :)
@Fin, but you help your Mom at home though! :)
One of my co-workers and I always talk about bringing our kitties to work, but our boss is not a cat person. So, it's probably best they stay home and wait for me. It's kind of nice having the three of them waiting at the door for me after a long day at work :)
Don't I wish! Of course, I'm not sure how much actual work would get done...
Pat
www.critteralley.blogspot.com
@Yvonne my Angel Bobo used to wait religiously in the window for me to return from work...I would see his little silhouette when it was dark, everyone knew him in the complex I lived at because I lived on the first floor and he was always in the window! Cody and Dakota don't do that because when I got them I had already lost my job and was home, they are used to me being home. Plus it is different, they have each other, Bobo only had himself.
@Pat good point about getting work done! lol
Our mombean works at home now and we snoopervise her and let her use OUR office. Yep, that room is totally ours.
However our mombean says it probably wouldn't have worked for her in an away office because she would be looking at the kitties all day and not get work done.
Sounds like a truly warm and relaxed work space. There's something to be learnt by other companies in terms of productivity (although I'd just sit and cuddle all day :-)) What brilliant natural advertising for Trupanion. Sure sounds like an insurrance we could do well with here!!
Big hug
xo
I think that is a wonderful idea, except for the car ride!
My cats are too skittish to be good "office" cats anywhere but here at home with me, but I think it's awesome that a company would allow them.
@Julia I think Cody would only do well being home with me as well but I also think it would be great for companies to allow them.
@Brian lol, I hear ya!
@Gods Little People I couldn't agree more, (((((big hugs)))) back at ya!
@Team Tabby my Mom says the same! lol. also, I own OUR office too!
I wish we could bring our pets to work (my office job in daytime) but alas the mandate was emailed company-wide (we're a nationwide company) that absolutely no pets or children allowed in the office as they may be disruptive (children) and people are allergic to dogs or cats. Honestly, my dogs and cats are better behaved than many kids I see in public. But thankfully my dog is now officially a Registered Service dog so no one can stop me. But I need her more when I'm alone. But I WILL bring Johnny Walker (my black cat) for Halloween as part of my costume. I plan to dress as SUPER CAT LADY and make my boss, the CEO dress a Batman.
Beautiful photos!
Loving all the great discussion!
I really do feel lucky that both the management and all the employees here are so pet friendly. Everyone really has a passion for pets and I never have to worry about sounding crazy when I talk about mine. :)
I considerz maiself da offis manager in our home offis... plus da muze, wen it comes time fur mai mommy to work on her bloggy. However our mombean says it probably wouldn't have worked for her in an away office because she would be looking at the kitties all day and not get work done.
