Hi everybody! It's Cody again wishing you all a Terrific Tuesday! I am one lucky kitty! Mom entered a contest for me over at Katie Mitchell's "The Pet Lady's Blog" and I WON! If you haven't visited Katie's blog, by all means do! She always has something exciting going on!

The contest that I won was a give-away by Creme de la Cat. Creme de la Cat has a vast selection of reasonably priced cat toys, cat beds and gifts for cat lovers!

I won a $25 gift certificate to purchase anything that I wanted in the store!

The item I chose was the Leopard Den Puzzle:

Isnt' that just the coolest puzzle ever? When I chose it I immediately thought of Zee & Zoey and their Mom, Deb Barnes who ALWAYS wears leopard print! She definitely needs to pawchase this for her kitties!

This is the most fun toy ever! It is super soft and cozy and comes with those cute balls above. Mom puts catnip in the holes and drops the balls in and I go to town! I swat those balls and use my paws like scoopers! I scoop those balls up, run down the hallway and tease my Sheltie brother, then I drop one ball by my food bowl as a thank-you to my pawrents for the stinky-goodness they provide for me.

Ordering was a breeze for my Mom (I can't type so I don't know). The customer service provided by Terry Walker-Coleman (who owns Creme De La Cat) was superb and boy did my toys arrive FAST!
I barely had time for a cat nap and they were here! Now THAT'S SERVICE!

Cat Fanciers' Association All Breed Cat Show In Allen Park, Michigan, January 28 & 29th

The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) will hold an all breed and household pet cat show on Sat. January 28 & Sun. January 29, 2012 at the Allen Park Community Ctr 15800 White St. Allen Park, MI 48101 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

"White Owl"

The show will feature two days of judged competition, as well as exhibitors and breeders providing information and offering close-up views of their cats. Breeds represented will cover a wide variety, including Persians, Maine Coons, Orientals, Birmans, Tonkinese, Ragdolls, Siamese, Bombays and more.

The show is sponsored by the Midwest Persian Tabby Fanciers, a local non-profit cat club. Internationally qualified CFA judges will evaluate the cats.

The show offers a variety of interests for all people, from cat enthusiasts to families with small children. Judging will take place throughout both days, so you can be in a ring watching the judging, or walking the exhibit hall looking at the beautiful cats. You can ask questions of breeders and exhibiters. It really is great fun for everyone.

Admission to the show is $5 - adults, $4 - seniors, $3 - children and no charge to children under age 5. Parking is free.

Founded in 1906, The Cat Fanciers’ Association has been devoted to the promotion and protection of all cats. Now THIS is unusual! THIS is a FIRST! We were just "tagged" by our friend Sammy from One Spoiled Cat and due to having NOTHING prepared for today, for the FIRST TIME- EVER we aren't going to take a gazillion months to respond!

The first requirement of this blog post is that we answer TEN "BURNING" questions about us! We decided that since this blog is a joint venture, Cody and I would BOTH answer! Here goes!

Cody- cuddly, loving, determined, intelligent, adorable, lazy and fearless.
Mom- ditto, ditto, ditto, ditto, funny, focused and stubborn.

2) What keeps you up at night?
Cody- my never-ending quest for food

3) Who would I like to be?
Cody- "King of the Forrrrrrrrrrrreeeeesssst!!!!"

Mom- best? The people and their pets that I have met along the way both online and in person. Worst? Self-imposed deadlines which translates to pressure that I have created for MYSELF. Bottom line? "WHO CARES?" As far as blogging goes, NONE of us are nearly as important as we think that we are.

If you maintain the untainted child-like quality of being able to be excited about things that you see and experience and never lose your ability to imagine, or have a laugh that starts from deep within your belly, then in my opinion, you HAVE IT ALL!!! Book Review:Raising My Furry Children By Tracy Ahrens, Guest Story by Steve Dale

I had the pleasure and honor of being given the opportunity of reading and reviewing a delightful and touching book, Raising My Furry Children by Tracy Ahrens.

Before I even opened the book I knew I was going to love it. I know there are some of you who don't consider your pets to be your "furry children", but I also know there are many of you, like myself, WHO DO.

Tracy Ahrens is one of those people. Her book features columns that she had written over the years, more or less in diary form (minus dates of entry and in no particular chronological order) that highlight moments in her "furry children's" lives that run the gamut of hilarious to heart-wrenching.

If you are like me you derive great enjoyment from reading about the experiences of other "pet parents" that make you laugh and that also offer you the opportunity to learn. Raising My Furry Children will not disappoint.

The first half of the book features Tracy's first dog, an American Brittany named Speckles (who will be featured on my dog's blog, Dakota's Den, Friday, January 27th.) and the hilarious and touching moments of his life that Tracy has so beautifully documented. A portion of the proceeds of the book sales will go to American Brittany Rescue.

Also in the first half of Raising My Furry Children is a guest story by Steve Dale. Steve authors a twice-weekly syndicated newspaper column (Tribune Media Services), and is host of two nationally syndicated shows (www.petworldradio.net) and Steve Dale's Pet World, heard on WGN in Chicago. He's also a contributing editor at USA Weekend. Recently he was named a National Ambassador for the American Humane Association.

The second half of the book touched me the most because it features Tracy's cats:

Desdemona-who was from a family of four kittens that were born under Tracy's desk in college. At the time, she was studying William Shakespeare and as a result each one of the kittens were named after Tracy's favorite Shakespearean characters.

Chocolate Drop aka (C.D.)-who Tracy adopted when she was one or two months old from a friend who got her from a farm where she was no longer wanted. C.D. had epilepsy and Tracy says I believe that she is truly special; that is why I was given the chance to live with and learn from this creature with a devastating condition.

"Joan Of Arc"

Joan of Arc-who was rescued from the side of a road where she was standing next to one of her siblings who had been killed after being hit by a car. Tracy named her Joan of Arc because of her determination and strength to live through anything.

"Captain Jack Sparrow"

Captain Jack Sparrow-was the latest edition to the family at the time that Tracy was writing the book. Tracy initially named the little man Sparrow after the sparrows he was infatuated with. She received him after she had lost her job and her life "was in a whirlwind". Tracy says that Shamans say that sparrows are spirit messengers that teach us how to find your soul song. She says that she found that message to be fitting for the time Sparrow came into her life.

Being the cat person that I am Tracy's documentation in the second half of the book particularly touched me. A few of the stories that Tracy has so touchingly documented are:

Desdemona being a "closet searcher"

An adorable passage about Desdemona and C.D. and their love of playing with rolled up "paper wads"

Pet names as in the names we call our pets that are different than the ones we have given them. Tracy says: I have come to realize that if I ever have a child, it probably will never know its real name.

Saying Good-bye to Daddy- about Tracy's divorce and it's affect on her "furry children"

Saying Good-bye To Pepper- her brother's cat of 14 years who they had to put to sleep due to Pepper suffering from an enlarged heart. This section had me in tears because it made me relive my own devastation after watching my beloved Bobo's decline having been afflicted with the same condition. This section gripped my heart and didn't let go.

From Tracy when having to say good-bye to her beloved Desdemona:
I had recently read a book, "Spirit Animals and the Wheel of Life", by Hal Zina Bennett. In it, Bennett speaks of the Zuni culture of New Mexico. When the men of the tribe hunted, they would rush to a dying animal, press their lips to the mouth of that animal and exchange its last breaths with it. "This ritual, " the book states, "is one of literally intermingling the spirits of the hunter and the hunted, of honoring the sacrifice and acknowledging their spiritual bonds." I was bending over Desdemona that morning, my face close to hers, kissing her, and talking softly into her ear. I exchanged breaths with her. In those final moments, our spirits intermingled.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the superb illustrations (48 total!) that were drawn by Tracy and are featured in this book. They were done using graphite (a medium I ADORE working with but without the exquisite results that Tracy has brilliantly accomplished.) I was in complete awe of their life-like appearance and the obvious artistic gift that Tracy has in her execution of these drawings.

I have no human children that I have given birth to, which is always a nagging thought when I think about events that have transpired in my life. I always dreamed I would have children of my own but God had other plans.

As a result my beloved Bobo, my cuddly and courageous Cody, and my delightfully-daffy Dakota are all three the "children I never had." To those who think it is nuts to refer to your pets as your "furry children" I say "pfffffffffffttttt!!!"

To those who share Tracy's feelings as well as mine, I say pick up a copy of this tenderly touching gem. You will be laughing, nodding in agreement, and touched to your core.

Thankful Thursday-Candle Lighter Award

This morning I opened up an email from a special blog that I follow, One Spoiled Cat and discovered that I had received a huge honor, I had received an award, The Candle Lighter Blog Award!

Thank you Sammy!!!!

What touched me the most about this particular award was that it was for bloggers who "light a candle in the darkness with their blog." or who "bring light into the world with their blogs"

THAT, in my opinion is an incredible honor.

I may not be the most knowledgeable, Facebook "liked" or Twitter "followed", technologically savvy, esteemed or prolific of the cat writers on the web, but to know that Cat Chat made Sammy of One Spoiled Cat smile or brightened his day is the ultimate reward.

My goal when I started Cat Chat back in the Fall of 2009, knowing NOTHING about blogging, was simply to take my love of cats and create a warm and cozy corner where other cat lovers could convene, be made to feel welcome, and share their love of cats with mine through entertaining posts, videos, photos, stories and products.

My "Baby Bobo"

I never set out to be a cat maven, nor do I think that I am. I am merely like many of YOU. I love cats. Plain and simple. I dedicated Cat Chat to my beloved "soul kitty" Bobo...and wanted this blog to also serve as a THANK YOU to him, for the 18 years that he unselfishly gave ME the honor of sharing my life with HIM. It's the first Monday of the New Year! January 2, 2012, 1-2-2012 (which you should read as "one, two, two-oh-one-two") or "one two buckle my shoe" (yeah I still haven't recovered from the nip in case you couldn't tell!)

Mom was going to do a different blog post today but didn't quite finish and while she was procrastinating, (obviously stopping that activity wasn't on her resolution list) she got to thinking (that in itself is a feat.)

What was she thinking about? (Not sure but I could smell the wood burning.) Actually she started to think about the word JANUARY, where it originated and what it actually MEANS.

Mom found out from Wikipedia that January actually means "door to the year." Mom thought that was pretty cool! It is named after Janus (Ianuarius) the "God of the doorway", the name's beginnings comes from Roman mythology and comes from the Latin word for "door." (Ianua)

Speaking as a cat, I have no use for doors. In my house I am the "God of the doorway." If I see a door that is shut it will become my mission to open it or request (using whatever means are at my disposal, which might not be pretty.) to have it opened.

Here are some of my impressions of the doors in my house:

Kitchen Door-if you have a door that closes to this room, be sure it is removed NOW. (Notice I said REMOVED not OPENED) The kitchen is our lifeline! It is the land of noms and plenty!! Make sure it is a free zone at all times!

Closet Door- If this door isn't already open I use my pliable claws in just the right motion to release the door that leads to one of the best sleeping areas of the house. There are cushy towels, warm recently-washed sheets all pre-laid and ready for some "z-z-z-z-z-z-s", no "biscuit making" necessary in this area! This is a napping cat's dream!!! I also use it as my "deodorizing area", when I appear from the depths of the closet I smell like BOUNCE!!

Bathroom Door- If your litterbox is in the bathroom as mine is, it could be quite a serious situation if the door were ever to be closed! I share a bathroom with my Mom and I have free access to it at all times! I must say she is quite the considerate room mate! She has actually walked into the bathroom while I am about to "make a deposit" and said "Ohhhh I'm sorry! I didn't realize you were there!!" and has promptly exited...well trained my friends, well trained.

Dryer Door- I know it is warm and smells delightful, but kitties, this is one door that you do not want to mess with! Stay away from this door! You could get inside and find yourself permanently pressed for life!!

HIDEY-HOLE DOOR-if you are like me you have a variety of different "hidey-holes" or kitty houses to sleep in. I know they don't have doors and don't require opening, but they serve an important purpose. You can retreat to these havens to escape from the evil vacuum, get a little peace if you have a doggy brother like I do, or if you aren't feeling your best they provide a dark, hard-to-reach-me-to-put-me-in--the-PTU safe-zone (digging your claws into whatever soft blanket your pawrent put at the bottom of the PTU is a requirement) which will frustrate them as they go through contortions to remove you, and could possibly buy you a cancellation at the V-E-T. If your pawrent is like my Mom, she must be ON TIME when she visits the vet, that is one of her many fixations. If we are going to be really late, voila, CANCELLATION!

So my friends those are just a few of the doors that are important in my world....what are your feelings about some of the doors in yours?

Book Review: Pampered Pets On A Budget: Written By: Jeffrey L. Barnes And Kristen M. Levine

I was excited when I was contacted a few weeks back asking if I would like to receive a copy of Pampered Pets On A Budget by Jeffrey L. Barnes And Kristen M. Levine to read and review.

My pets, like everyone else's are pampered and since I am virtually unemployed and my husband has recently retired, the idea that I could read about how to pamper my pet and receive ideas/suggestions about how to do so AND maintain a budget had my ears perked and my tail on alert!

These are tough times in which we live. Every day people are losing jobs and struggling to make ends meet, while the prices of groceries, medical care, etc. continue to rise. Sadly, when a family experiences a financial blow one of the first casualties is often the family pet.

As pet lovers we can never have too many tools in our tool belt to help us not only care for our pets but to maintain a budget while doing so and this book sets out to do what it promises, and that is to:

"help pet parents uncover new ways to save on the products and services you need to take great care of your pets, without compromising your pet's health and wellness care or severely damaging your pocketbook."

This book is short (74 pages) but don't let that fool you. It is 74 pages that are jam-packed with must-have information for today's pet owner.

Take a look at some of the chapters:

Chapter 3-The Internet is not Always Right: this chapter was written by Jeffrey Barnes and is one of my personal favorites. We have all fallen victim to running to the internet when our animal is ill. It can be anything from a Google search to posting a problem on Facebook and receiving 500 differing opinions. Many of those opinions include horror stories that when you are already stressed and worried, are the LAST things that you need to hear.

This chapter explains:

How the internet is NOT a substitute for your veterinarian, your veterinarian knows YOU and your pet!
It reinforces how when you are reading ANY information from the internet you need to look at the qualifications, licensing and formal education of the source providing that information!
It mentions how drug and vaccine manufacturers stand behind their products ONLY when they have been purchased directly from your veterinarian.

Other great chapters in this 10 chapter book are:

Chapter 4-Trusted Online Pet Resources-

in this chapter Kristen Levine points out that there is some online information that can be trusted but that it should NEVER take the place of human professionals when it comes to your beloved pet.

This chapter talks about:
General pet information and adoption sites such as petfinder.com and catster.com
It also mentions reputable Veterinary and Health Sites such as VeterinaryPartner.com

Chapter 5-The Value of Your Veterinarian: as explained by Jeffrey Barnes one of my favorite points made in this chapter is "your veterinarian is your pet's medical health care captain and is the only authority on medical issues."

Chapter 7-Pet Health Insurance is discussed by Kristen Levine and is relevant to me because I am still pondering the issue as to whether or not to purchase pet insurance for Cody and Dakota. Some points that Kristen mentions that are important to consider are:

Consider Premiums, Co-Pays and Deductibles
Pick Coverage, Not Cost

This book contains so much information and delivers it in an interesting, straight-forward, concise and reader-friendly style.

I loved that at the end of each chapter there is a page called Chapter Highlights which is a summation of information listed in an easy to refer to bulleted format.

Mr.Chewy, Our New "Go To" For Pet Products!

Like many others that I have noticed in the great cat blog-o-sphere I was contacted by a representative of a website called Mr.Chewy

They offered me $50 that I could use on any products of my choice from their website. I was skeptical at first (notice that says "at first") until I visited their website and saw the bounty of name brand pet products that awaited me!

They have name brand dog and cat food, dog and cat treats, cat litter, etc. I was amazed and thrilled that they are all name brand, high quality products. They even have a page on their website where you can literally SHOP BY BRAND (click to check it out.)

The product I chose was (3) 17-lb bags of World's Best Cat Litter Multiple Cat Formula (yes I don't have "multiple" cats, but I like the multiple cat formula.)

I placed my order on the super easy to navigate website and figured I would be waiting for some time for it to arrive.

I thought wrong!

I placed my order on December 15th and it was delivered on December 17th! I was shocked!

( I didn't photograph my order because the bags arrived in 2 giant boxes that I have yet to open, I know, I am awful!! I didn't open them because I am still finishing another bag of litter.)

What's worse is she only took ONE photo! What a loser!!!!

Mom was confused about when she was supposed to post because she joined at the last second (procrastination is her strong suit). She noticed that the kitties that we sent our Secret Santa stuff to didn't post about it so Mom wasn't sure what to do!

We DO have some SAD and EMBARRASSING news to report and it pertains to my brother Dakota.

Well, part of the reason Mom didn't let me blog about our Secret Santa gifts is because within FIVE MINUTES (yes, FIVE MINUTES)...Dakota acquired a taste for duck and experienced a strong craving. The craving resulted in the duck being forever grounded because:

Mom didn't have the heart to photograph it.....

Nikki even wrote in her Secret Santa note:

"Dakota, I hope you enjoy playing with your new duck! I know a dog who has one and he loves it!!"

Guess Dakota took the concept of love a little too far and thought that "love" meant to devour the duck...

You will have to trust me when I say that I LOVE my mousie and my fishie!! Unlike SOME "animals" that reside in this house I have a strong appreciation for anything that is handmade! The thought of making a meal out of one of my toys (and a HANDMADE TOY that was a GIFT to boot!) would NEVER occur to me.

I have a much more discriminating palate.

A cat would never behave in such an unrefined and primitive manner.

I'm thoroughly disgusted.

The Holiday Season is almost over, but there is Still Time to Give to Animals (and Cats) in Need!

I was notified about this charity initiative the other day, and I must say it sounds wonderful. It is also fresh in my mind because the Michigan Humane Society also did the “Twelve days of Catmas” which I found entertaining and emotional, as I hope those cats have now found a home.

Until the end of December, there is charity initiative going on to help the Michigan Humane Society. MOBIBO, a locally created mobile app that sends you deal and discounts (think mobile coupons) in the Southeast Michigan area, has partnered up with the MHS in order to create a donation initiative to their cause, which they are calling “Download to Donate”.

Until December 31^st at midnight, every free download of the MOBIBO mobile app will count as a .25 cent donation to the Michigan Humane Society. There is no limit to how much MOBIBO will donate and you get paid .25 cents to view each discount and deal from MOBIBO. That’s right cat lovers and followers, a free mobile app download will count as a donation to the MHS and you can get paid to use it. What a great idea!

The Michigan Humane Society needs your help in raising donation funds so they can continue to provide their services to animals in need, especially during this cold holiday season. Here are a couple quick facts about the Michigan Humane Society that were given to me:

· The Michigan Humane Society is the oldest and largest animal welfare organization in the state of Michigan.

· They care for more than 100,000 animals each year through life-saving programs and services, so you know their plate is full this holiday season.

· The MHS has reached their goal of 100% adoption rate the past two years, each year finding homes for 10,000 animals and reuniting 1,200 people with lost animals.

· They receive no government funding, so it is up to charitable donations (such as this one) that keep them operating and providing their services.

Another Year Is Almost Gone...

It is hard to believe that in less than a week we will be saying our good-byes to the year 2011 and will be ringing in 2012.

When I was young I used to laugh and make fun of my parents when they would say that time goes by so fast, now that I am older I find myself echoing their sentiments more than I should probably admit.

I actually get excited when a new year is upon us. I think I can equate my excitement to the same reason that I am a "morning" person.

A new year is a clean slate, as is the dawning of a new day. It is 365 days that lie before me that are pure and untouched. No mistakes have been made. You can either dive in and rip the decorative paper off of the gift you know awaits, or you can take your time, lovingly and leisurely unwrapping first the bow, then the tape and finally the paper until you reveal the pleasure that is inside.

Another reason I love when a new year is beckoning is that I ADORE calendars!
I actually have a number of them, in my office alone I have four. One is a wall calendar, one is more of a photo calendar that you can't write on and I have two more that I use as blogging calendars.

My favorite of the calendars I have bought for 2012 is The Cats of Cat Wisdom 101 Calendar by "Award-Winning Photographer" Layla Morgan Wilde.

Anyone who reads Layla's blog, Cat Wisdom 101 knows that Layla is not only a talented wordsmith, she is also a perfectionist. Layla is also an artist. She has a knack of capturing cats as they go about their day, be it cuddling with a stuffed animal, or communing with nature and turning it into a work of art. Her use of lighting, the scenery already present in the woodsy expanse of her yard, and light bouncing off of the fur of her beloved cats are indeed a delight! Layla then makes use of her love of words by adding captions of her own creation that are sure to make us pause, think and smile.

I ordered two of her calendars, a wall-sized version that is hanging in my office, (which is solidly made and offers large squares for writing important appointments, etc.). I also purchased the desk-sized version of the same calendar that functions as an editorial calendar for Cat Chat. (If you are a blogger I can't stress enough how important and useful keeping an editorial calendar is!)

The calendars are everything that you would expect them to be coming from Layla Morgan Wilde's loving mind and hands. They are a cat lover and quote lover's delight.

Everything that Layla does is the epitome of "purrfection." You will find these calendars to be utterly delightful. I have had mine hanging since it arrived a few weeks ago just so I could keep looking at the snowy splendor captured on January's photo.

Book Feature: "Cat Telling Tales: A Joe Grey Mystery" By Shirley Rousseau Murphy

Almost exactly a year ago I reviewed Cat Coming Home another mystery by Shirley Rousseau Murphy (click on title to read). This year, I was the recipient of another mystery in the Joe Grey series: Cat Telling Tales.

Hi! If you aren't familiar with us, let me just say - it's great to meet you. And, of course, a big shout-out to you who have been our readers. Our blog began it's humble beginnings back in August of 2010. I was looking for a way to work on my writing skills and to get some of it out there on the public highway of the internet.

I had no clue what I was doing. Seriously. I didn't even know what "blog" referred to! It's been a steep learning curve since then, that's for sure. Yet, a glorious adventure - filled with so much to learn and so many wonderful people to meet. Caren and Cody's blog was among the very first sites I became a regular reader of (and still am). Little does she know, I learned just from visiting her site daily.

CindyLu has been the perfect spokespet for the welfare of animals - something I'm very passionate about. Through the blog, I've been able to highlight the good works of many working ceaselessly to make the world a better place for our fellow creatures. It has also served well to inform and enlighten others on issues they might not be aware of.

I became an avid advocate for animal welfare only a few years ago. My neighbors joined a pet rescue organization, later becoming the cat team coordinators. They asked me if I would help out - I had no idea just how much I would be involved until my four kids and I were up to our ears with foster cats in our home and weekend adoption events to attend.

Yes, cats. It amuses me sometimes that people assume my blog is a "dog blog", because it features CindyLu. Dogs are only a part of what we represent, and that CindyLu herself speaks on behalf of, on our site. Admittedly, a larger portion of our posts tend to be about dogs. That's just because there seem to be more issues about dogs than cats. Okay, and more people wanting to read about dogs.

Am I biased? Yes. But not the way you would think. I'm an admitted cat ~~freak~~ lover. All things feline. As I type, I have a foster kitty snuggled up against my chest and shoulder, one of my own curled up alongside my hip. I spend my days online - leaning against a cushion, half-stretched out across the sofa, laptop on my thighs. Nuts, right? Maybe. But it affords the cats the most comfortable positions to snuggle with me. And that's my top priority each day. Serving them well.

"Chandler & Sophia"

After I joined the pet rescue group (Almost Home Foundation), our house filled with litters of foster kittens and the occasional adult. Over 60 cats have found their forever homes after staying with us. We then were invited to assist a foster team created for special needs cats. I would spend two nights a week tending to the care and nurturing of these precious animals. Over the course of 4 1/2 years, I helped care for hundreds of cats, loving every minute of it. Each and every one of these has left a pawprint on my heart. Guaranteed.

To this day, I feel I know much more about cats than dogs, even though I've had both as pets, written about both, and become a regular reader of both types of blogs. As for what matters, though, I love them both and want to see a better world for pets and all living creatures.

That's why I jumped at the opportunity to join the team at Be the Change for Animals - an amazing website that enables people to do what they can for animals, even if they are limited on time and resources. The founders, Kim Clune and Amy Burkert, had the most wonderful idea for what has become an amazing community of those caring about animals and promoting animal welfare causes.

So if you don't find me around town, doing something to benefit animals - you'll undoubtedly find me around the web, doing the same. If there is one single message CindyLu and I wish to convey, it's that we have within our power, each and every one of us, to do something positive for animals. Caring about them is the first step, but with just a little effort everyone can find some way to make our world a better place. Caren, Cody and Dakota do this every day. We love them for it!

Whew!!! It has been a looooong over 24 hrs!!

You see Mom really goofed up big time yesterday. She was running around trying to arrange some new lamps that she got and in her usual impatient way she started unplugging everything in sight!

Well, she pulled out so many plugs that she disconnected our Internet! There were so many tangled cords, it was a MESS!

The nice cable man came today but then Mom and I couldn't come on because we were busy with Chanukah.

Book Review: The Cujo Cat Chronicles Musings Of A MAD HOUSECAT By Douglas Dunn/Cujo

I first discovered the book The Cujo Cat Chronicles because I follow an incredibly well-written blog of the same name, whose narrator (Cujo), superbly communicates the thoughts of a cat by using language that honors the superior intelligence that cats possess. The blog as well as the book are written by the obviously brainy Douglas Dunn, with assistance from his (no slouch in the cerebral department) cat, Cujo.

The Cujo Cat Chronicles are musings of a tyrannical housecat named Cujo. Cujo lives up to his name which means "killer cat or dog", something that is "often cute, but will turn around and kill you". Cujo also means "your God, your Owner, someone you will bow down to."

Cujo refers to his family as well as his fans as "minions" a word that is aptly used because minions aren't just servants, they can also be:

"a slavish follower or one that is generally regarded as important or a "favored" person" (what caught my attention was a word located below the definition of "minion" and that word is "dogsbody", which is defined as: "somebody given menial jobs: a worker who does boring tasks that others do not want to do.".

Cujo often mentions in this book that if you expect certain behavior from him then "get a dog."

Cujo's "Minions" are:

Doug- "a creature of the hairless 2 legged variety." His activities consist of feeding Cujo, buying him fuzzy toys that seem to amuse him more than they amuse Cujo, and "cleaning the royal litter".

Kathy- Doug's mate. She also feeds Cujo and tells Doug to "clean the royal litter."

Ivan the Tolerable- a fellow feline and Cujo's acting "aide de camp". "He is very large, easily mislead and quite dim." He is also Cujo's "lead enforcer."

Tiger Lily- a female gray tabby. "She's an accomplished whiner" Cujo chooses to keep her around because she makes "cool sounds when he smacks her."

What about Cujo? By his own admission he is "without humility." He is sarcastic, sadistic, sardonic and as it says on the back cover of this intelligently written, FUN book "one could almost say that Napoleon had a Cujo Cat Complex." Being a huge fan of Simon Cowell, (coincidentally or not, American Idol is mentioned a few times in the book) I would say that Cujo's personality is reminiscent of his as well.

The Cujo Cat Chronicles "is a journey into the mind of a small cat with a huge ego. He welcomes his readers into his Kingdom and then seeks to subjugate them."

There are few cat blogs and books about cats that have an "edge." The "stars" of the book usually have a soft spot somewhere, not Cujo. Everything annoys him, his enjoyment comes from the less than intelligent antics of others, his observations are spot on and are conveyed by using humor that isn't sophomoric.

I greatly enjoyed this book but there was one thing that I found to be lacking. Dunn did such a brilliant job of verbally painting the personalities of all three of his cats, (Cujo, Ivan and Tiger Lily), that I would have enjoyed seeing some photos of theirs interspersed throughout the book.

Looking at the photo of Dunn and Cujo on the back cover, I think they bear a striking resemblance to each other. I think that Doug Dunn who appears as mild mannered as a temperate summer day, must have many of Cujo's personality traits, which whether or not they will admit it, seems to be the case with the majority of pet lovers whose animals "speak" for them. Dunn's blog and his book are the perfect vehicles for him to "release his inner Cujo."

If we dare to admit it, there probably is a ~~little~~

A LOT of Cujo in ALL of us, there certainly is in me, which makes this book (as well as the blog) the perfect guilty pleasure, a place where you can embrace your "Evil Twin"

and laugh yourself silly while doing so!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Doug Dunn was born and raised in Central Texas. He now lives in Oak Harbor, Washington with his "lovely bride" and he has enough animals to provide the cast of a Disney movie. Doug hopes that this book is the first of many books to come. (I hope so too!)

Bring On The POOP!!

Yep! That was me yesterday. It happened. I was happily resting on my favorite blanket when Mom came over to me and said she had to have a "talk" with me. She told me that because I wasn't eating or pooping I was off to the V-E-T... AGAIN!

You guessed it. I had the "Big E"...they should call THAT the "Big Easy" cause not long after "Dr.Smiley's" gang (he was off yesterday planning his next assault on me) invaded my private spot....things began MOVING!! Boy did they MOVE!!! I HAD A HUGE POOP!! IT WAS SUPERB! EPIC! You would have to travel far and wide to find a more perfect poop!! On the "poop-o-meter" it TOPPED THE CHARTS! So fine in fact, that the nice female doctor said she was so EXCITED that she was gonna TEXT "Dr.Smiley!" (If you ask me, that's pretty sick, wonder if she photographed it. Sure hope it doesn't turn up on Facebook!!)

Not long after the "poop that rocked the world" I came home. I ate a hearty dinner, snuggled alllll night on the couch with Mom, let my Sheltie brother kiss me and kiss me and even had my usual rabbit nightcap before bed!

This morning when Dad got up to feed me I was READY and WAITING! I ate EVERY BIT AND I WANTED MORE!

You are NOT gonna believe this my friends, Mom just got up to check and see if I have pooped yet this morning (boy does she ever need to get a LIFE!) and so far there isn't a poop in the pot!

If you excuse me, I think I better get my butt moving and get busy producing my next epic poop!!!

I have had ENOUGH of the V-E-T for one week!

Cody Update And Thank You For Your Concern!!

Hi everybody! It's Cody!! I am home now and boy oh boy did I ever have an ordeal!!

My less-than-desirable journey started on Sunday. Mom came home from the football game and noticed that I had gotten sick after eating my breakfast.

When Mom & Dad called me into the kitchen for dinner I really didn't feel like eating. This is when Mom went into crazy-woman-panic-mode. You see she says I am "food obsessed", (talk about the "pot calling the kettle black!" What nerve!)

Hours passed and my food sat untouched. At 10:30pm Mom tried to give me my usual nightcap of rabbit kibble. (Nope, no way, nada. I'll pass thank-you-very-much!)

This is when Mom really starts going over the edge. She decided to sleep on the couch in the event that I got sick during the night. The way she snores I don't know how she expected to hear anything!

Monday morning arrives: Mom is elated that I had eaten my kibble, not all of it but most of it. At lunch time I heard her telling "Dr.Smiley" that I had eaten as well. They were telling secrets that if I got sick or stopped eating, I would have to come in and see him. No thanks. I high-tailed it into the kitchen and chowed down.

Monday night dinner time: I wasn't hungry. I wasn't feeling well either. Against my better judgement I skipped dinner, and then I proceeded to do the most stupid thing ever! I chose to not use the litter box! I decided not to go to the bathroom AT ALL!

Tuesday morning is when Mom went over the edge. She called "Dr.Smiley" who is her partner in crime and he said to bring me right in with no appointment! Talk about "service with a smile" all at MY EXPENSE!

I saw Mom move my PTU (for those not familiar, in the blog-o-sphere a "PTU" is a "Personal" or "Portable" Transport Unit, otherwise known as a CAT CARRIER) and I made a run for it! I ran straight into Daddy, I KNEW he would be on MY SIDE! Noooo!!! He tricked me! He grabbed me, he even held down the PTU and Mom shoved my sorry gray butt into it. I was humiliated.

When we arrived at "Dr. Smiley's Evil Laboratory" the unthinkable happened! Mom and Dad LEFT ME THERE! They left me ALONE with "Dr.Smiley!" What were they thinking!!??

All I can tell ya my friends is that they poked me, they took my blood, they took pictures of my belly (everyone loves my belly so THAT was no surprise!) and they locked me in a cage for hours and hours! I was getting angrier by the minute! I decided to hide under a towel and shut my eyes hoping that when I woke up it would all be a bad dream.

"Dr.Smiley" told Mom he gave me an "appetite stimulant" Mom thought what I thought. That is like giving Santa Claus a BIG BELLY! You give an "appetite stimulant" to someone who LOVES TO EAT??? (Whatever flips his boat is fine with me! Hmmm...I may be on to something! Pretend I don't want to eat and get a happy pill that makes the humans FEED me MORE!! Yee-Haw!!)

I ate all of my food but it grew later and later and still no sign of Mom and Dad. I am usually a mild-mannered sort but I had had ENOUGH!

"Dr.Smiley" and I go way back, you see he has been taking care of me since I was about 12 wks old and normally when I see him I am the purrfect gentleman. Not today! There are certain things you DON'T DO know matter how long you know someone and poking and prodding me are taking just a wee bit of advantage of our history, ya know pal?

You know what I did? I growled and hissed and demanded to see Mom and Dad immediately! You know what happened? It was like MAGIC!! Mom and Dad came!!!

"Dr.Smiley" proceeded to give Mom and Dad a full report, replete with a blow-by-blow report of my hissing and growling ( gee, thanks pal!!)

Mom and Dad were happy cause there are no blockages, my blood tested fine (I could have told them that and they could have saved A LOT of money! Silly humans!!) You know what I DO HAVE? I am backed up with POOP!!! You know what that means? I am FULL OF Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....(Ha! You thought I would say it didn't you?) Not "moi" I'm the purrfect gentleman, remember? I'm also no fool!

So "Dr.Smiley" let Mom and Dad take me home and said they have to watch me tonight. He is hoping that some of that poop will make its way out, if not, I hear there is something waaaay worse in store for me in the next day or so. It begins with an "E". I bet you can guess what THAT IS!

As a "thank you" to my Mom and Dad for unceremoniously dumping me and leaving me with "Dr.Smiley" all day, boy did I ever enhance their ride home! I howled and cried at the top of my lungs!! Mom actually was afraid cause she says I NEVER do that! (That's right lady, just think about leaving me there again and I will show YOU who's boss!)

I writhed and rolled and I even reached my arm out and started jimmying the lock on my PTU! I ALMOST opened it! I was quite proud of myself!

As we approached my home I began to smell familiar smells and I started to calm down. We came upstairs and my brother, Dakota put his face to mine through the iron gate of my PTU prison and gave me the biggest kiss ever!!

When they released me

You know what? I let him!! You know what they say, "there's no place like home Auntie Em, there's no place like home!!" Boy is THAT ever TRUE!

I was contacted about the Litter-Lifters that I am featuring today after they saw my post last weekend about Kitty City. The individual that represents the "Litter-Lifter" was telling me that their litter scoops are great for multi-cat households as well as for rescues.

Why?

Because they come in 3 different sizes and are available in a rainbow of colors! Oftentimes a rescue has to separate cats for whatever reason and having multiple colored scoops makes it easier to "assign" scoops to be used in different areas.

"Aren't all litter scoopers alike?" The answer is NO!

I received a number of Litter-Lifters to test, review and to give-away! Unfortunately with Cody not feeling well I didn't have an adequate time period to really "test" the lifters, but I was enormously impressed with their sturdy feel in my hand and the fact that they look durable. I kept two in purple for us (a large scoop for those "heavy jobs" and a small one for "petite poops!")

Pet Supplies Plus launches first Kitty City

free-roaming cat adoption center

Center aims to find homes for more homeless cats & kittens in Oakland County

The "winds of change" as they pertain to cat adoption have arrived at Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in the form of Kitty City, an enclosed open-air environment where cats are free to be...well....CATS.

Kitty City at Pet Supplies Plus in Bloomfield Hills is giving homeless cats something to purr about this holiday.

I had the honor and delight of visiting this kitty haven a few days ago and felt myself on the verge of tears the entire time I was there.

Tears of sadness? No, tears of happiness. I witnessed the joy of watching adoptable cats feeling happy, content and safe. I watched them play, groom each other, investigate, sunbathe and simply enjoy each others' company while my heart smiled.

The moment I walked in I "oooohed and ahhhhed" at the surroundings. I plopped myself down on the floor where I was promptly rewarded by a loving ball of fur who claimed me as their new "easy chair" and stayed on my lap the entire time that I was there. Oh these cats are clever, in this environment it is much easier for them to use their feline wiles to win you over with displays of affection such as I witnessed.

Would a scene such as the above be re-enacted if the cat had been in a cage? Never. Being able to interact with a cuddly kitty will greatly increase the likelihood of its being adopted and ultimately that is the objective.

We are all used to seeing adoptable cats looking listlessly back at us from their jail-like confines. No toys, no sunbeams, no play partners, just the four walls of their cages. Think a cat is happy waiting for their forever home in an environment like that? You try living in a cage and see how you would feel.

Kitty City, was created by Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus store owner Addy Shattuck, who told me she has been involved with finding homes for adoptable cats for the past twenty years. When you visit Kitty City you can tell the warm and homey environment was lovingly created by a cat lover (Addy has seven cats of her own).

I was so smitten with Kitty City and its residents that I could have stayed there for hours, happily petting, cooing to and giggling at the clowder that surrounded me. Addy joked that I looked so comfortable and thrilled with being there that she was going to put a cot in the room just for me so that I could stay there permanently. Sounds like a plan to me!

There are miniature wing-back chairs, kitty condos, varying levels of "cat shelves" or ledges if you will, staggered on the warm brick walls. There is a wicker sleeping area, numerous cat scratchers ( I added two more to their collection when I visited), plenty of cat toys to go around (Cody also kindly donated a number of his lightly-to-never-used toys), ample litter boxes and plenty of bowls of kibble for when the munchies kick in.

Kitty City is housed at the front of the store and is enclosed by glass which stretches from ceiling to floor (that is one heck of a size for "Kitty TV!!"), which enables the kitties to take sunbaths, watch people passing to and fro and of course the occasional tease of "Bird TV". When I was there it was a bright sunshiny day and a number of the cats were lounging in their favorite "sun puddles" as they would be if they were in their adoptive home. Had they been in a cage that luxury would be non-existent.

Addy keeps the safety of the kitties at the forefront by making sure that no one other than her staff may enter Kitty City at random -- you need a key to get in. This helps assure that a curious kitty won't come darting out with the opening and closing of doors.

People who are seeking to adopt a cat can watch their antics through the glass window, or if they are so inclined, Addy will let them in and they can observe, play with and really get a feel for the personality behind their soon-to-be new feline friend.

When I was there a woman stopped by who had recently had a kitty cross over
The Rainbow Bridge. I watched as she observed a number of the cats and how she proceeded to comment on how "this one is playful, this one is more shy, this one is a lover." I marveled at the fact that if the cats were in cages this is something a potential adopter would not be able to discern.

“The open environment lets the cats play and do what cats do while waiting for their real home," says Shattuck. They are so much more relaxed and content instead of being locked up. Customers love just to come in and watch the cats."

Kitty City will officially open with a holiday grand opening celebration, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, December 9, that includes free refreshments, cat food samples and in-store specials, along with 200 cats that will be up for adoption from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, December 9; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sat., December 10 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11.

Adopters get a free wellness exam for their cat or kitten provided by The Cat Practice of Birmingham, Michigan’s first feline-only veterinary hospital. Adoption fee of $59 includes spay or neuter, vaccines and health check. All cats are from Oakland Pet Adoption Center in Auburn Hills.

While the Bloomfield Hills Pets Supplies Plus has been adopting out homeless cats for years, Kitty City has already made a difference. Since opening just a few months ago, the store has already seen cat adoptions increase as shoppers are drawn to watching the antics of the felines through the window.

“Unfortunately, Oakland County has a huge overpopulation of cats” Shattuck said. “We are hoping that Kitty City will help more people see just how wonderful cats are as pets.”

Kitty City, created by Bloomfield Hills Pet Supplies Plus store owner Addy Shattuck, is a free-roaming cat habitat that gives felines a place to lounge, watch birds at an outdoor feeder and mingle with other cats while hoping that someone will spot them, fall in love and take them home. The glass and screen enclosed open-air environment also enables humans to interact with the cats.

I am excited because I am going to be visiting Kitty City next week! I am not sure if I am actually going to be at the grand opening or if I will visit a day or two before the grand opening but no matter what I am going to be there!!! Will DEFINITELY take photos! I love the concept of the kitties not being in cages. It is a "homey" environment that I think has to be better for the kitties!

Holiday Hazards To Watch For: Protect Your Cats! A Guest Blog By Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Hospital

FROM CAT CHAT: A number of us around the Pet Blog-o-sphere were contacted by Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Hospital, asking if we would please post the top holiday hazards that could cause harm to our pets. You will see various versions making their way around the internet. Because I was seeing this post turn up in a few places I hesitated posting it. Then I did some important thinking. I view the safety of our pets as being a vital concern all year, not just at the holidays, but the holidays bring with them a totally different set of challenges that cannot be repeated ENOUGH! I decided to post this after all:

Poinsettias fill homes with color during the holiday and we all hear how they’re life-threatening to cats. In fact, they’re not very toxic. While they do contain a milky sap that can irritate the mouth, symptoms from contact are usually mild. There are far more dangerous pet hazards during the holidays and the emergency veterinarians at VRCC Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Hospital (www.vrcc.com) share with us one case and then the top things for you to watch for.

Hank the cat with needle in stomach

Take the case of a cat named Hank. He came into VRCC after swallowing a thread that was still attached to a needle. You can see it in these x-rays. Cats love to chew and play with string, ribbon and other objects that are used to make homemade holiday garlands and crafts. Particularly appealing to cats in the shiny tinsel on the Christmas tree. If your cat is attracted to these objects, leave them in a drawer and decorate a simple tree foregoing the tinsel all together and placing the ornaments on higher branches to avoid the temptation to play.

For Hank, it was a happy ending, courtesy of the internal medicine veterinary specialists at VRCC. They were able to remove the needle and string using an endoscope.

Another tip? If you believe your cat has swallowed one of these objects, don’t try to pull it back out their throat yourself. Take them to your family veterinarian for an exam.
Other holiday hazards for cats include:

Spray on snow/flocking, foil, plastic wrap/shrink-wrap, Styrofoam peanuts.
XMAS Tree Food/Preservatives: Got a real tree this year? Watch out. Veterinarians at VRCC say sugar-based tree preservatives and tree food/water can harbor dangerous bacteria and a thirsty cat may decide to use the tree stand as a drinking bowl.
Batteries: It may be great to have batteries for that new, cool toy, but chewing or swallowing batteries is extremely toxic. Acid burns are common from puncturing the battery through chewing causing the acid to leak out as well as cuts from the metal casing.
Potpourri: The spicy smell can fill the house with a wonderful scent, but a cat can experience irritation and corrosion of the eyes, mouth, throat and esophagus if exposed to the liquid form.

FROM CAT CHAT: being Jewish I thought of another item that should be added to the holiday hazard list.

THE MENORAH: The Menorah holds lit candles that from my experience never fit properly and teeter precariously in their holders. If you are using a Menorah keep it out of the reach of your curious kitty, or better yet, if you own a cat you may want to consider using an electric Menorah. He could accidentally knock the Menorah over causing a fire or being attracted to the flickering lights he could singe his fur which could have dire consequences.

Keep a close eye on your kitties during this festive season and you’re sure to have a safe holiday season for all your furry friends
